2008 Volunteers

I am just going to be asking a few questions, but if you all would like to use it for more important purposes,I'm fine with it.

Q:Are there Full-Time and Part-Time volunteers?

Q:If so,what are they, and are there any perks for becoming one?

Q:Is there already a set shift for each type of volunteer?

Q:Are we assigned duties,or do we actually get to pick?

Q:When we're done with our shifts,do we keep the badges or give them back to the Volunteer heads?

Q:Are there Full-Time and

Q:Are there Full-Time and Part-Time volunteers?
yes

usually, all departments have full-time and part-time volunteers...and what you get out of it is a free badge and the satisfaction of giving back to the con

Q:Is there already a set shift for each type of volunteer?
they usually make a schedules before the con...at least i know they do...if they're short on ppl, just know that they'll most likely have you work a couple of hours extra

Q:Are we assigned duties,or do we actually get to pick?
your superior always tells you what to do, unless told otherwise

Q:When we're done with our shifts,do we keep the badges or give them back to the Volunteer heads?
you keep your badge; it is your ticket into the con

now this is just from personal experience, so don't assume that it is as i said....i hope you got the answers you were looking for ^^...

there is no really full-time

there is no really full-time or part-time postition per say (as defined by regular working stiffs)
Unless you count the Staff heads as fulltime, since we do it all year, and the regular volunteers as part-time, since it is just for that weekend.
I know we require that you volunteer for at least 14 hours to earn your badge. Now you can either work that in one long shift or split it up between the days. Most people would suggest splitting it, that way you don't exhaust yourself.

Perks all depend all depend on the department you work, and what the con can provide.
Some con's have crash space available, some have a con-suite where food is available for the volunteers. for most people it is the pleasure they get from working behind the scenes in the various departments.

Duties: that all depends on the departments & what they require. Usually this will be talked about between you and the department head.

As said before, you get to keep the badge. It gets you into the con, and is knda a reminder for later dates that you not only went to the con, but you helped work it.

i was wondering, what if

i was wondering, what if it's a school club that wants to volunteer the whole club? we'd like to work in groups of maybe 5-10, depending on the club officers. is that allowed, working in groups, i mean? we're hoping to assign an officer to each group, of course, but this is going to be our first planned con, and we're not sure if it's allowed. our club was very badly managed until very recently, so it's kind of expected that we're all noobs down here. i mean, we not trying to get free passes, we're trying to establish ourselves as an anime club, with a table and everything, and oni-con seems pretty organized, and a good choice for our first true con.

That is an excellent

That is an excellent question. I will have to bring it up at our nexting meeting, which unfortunately isn't until April. If you can hold off until then, then hopefully I can have an answer for you by then.

i was also wondering, are

i was also wondering, are there specific badges or some form of identification for volunteers?

Now that I can answer. There

Now that I can answer. There are Volunteer Specific badeges for the different departments. I am not sure what they are doing for this years badges, but I know the last couple of years the volunteer badges had the special artwork, next to the artwork section it said what department they were with, there was a section for their name / alias, and above that it said "Volunteer"

is there an age requirement

is there an age requirement to be a volunteer? because most of my school's anime club will be under 16. is it also possible to be a staff member even if you're not of age? i don't want to be just a volunteer. i turn 15 in june, and i'd really love to help out with the con this summer.

this convention isnt until november for this year

oh wow, really? -.- think i

oh wow, really? -.- think i don't know that already? i have no life and have surfed all the accessible oni-con website. don't need you to tell me that, vietgirl. anyways, i heard from some people who work at the grb that you guys usually start setting up about a month or two before the con, right?

We haven't mad the "formal"

We haven't mad the "formal" announcement and changed the website yet. However there is a forum post by ElspethRosemoon that mentions the con date.

As far as setting up a month or two before the con, things are being "setup" even now. I don't think volunteers are called upon much until the actual weekend of the convention and generally the convention doesn't have access to the space until the Thursday right before the convention. If you are interested in helping out at the convention there will be a sign up form available on the website shortly after we roll out our updates(this will be very soon). If you're looking to help out in other ways before the convention actually starts I would suggest hitting the contact form linked at the top of the page.
