Price keeps dropping. Flying united plus tax and fees of course end up around $512 However great price none the less. You can also book next year as well.
just as a FYI when I traveled in March of 2004 to Japan it cost me just over $800 and that was with me Flight Juggling and flying on a off season. Flight juggling meaning I booked 2 flights 1 out of LA using JAL and another to LA using Southwest.
BAckpacking hotels are $25 a night out in Minami-Senju (where i ended up staying). You get your own hotel room with a lock and a tv in there (just broadcast channels). You have to share 1 shower, but there arent tons of people there. Its like 15 min out of ueno, but you meet some interesting out of town people from all around the world, and they all speak english :P
Oh yeah, and if you can book tickets ahead of time, and find the Ghibli museum, GOGOGOGO!!!! I saw Mei to Konekobasu there... and it was the cutest thing ever. I had Ippongi Bang as a guide / translator as well... so that made it UBER cute. Theres a giant Laputa robot statue on the garden on the top of the museum you can goto. its wonderful.
Oh well price just jumped up again $100.

wow! i heard it cost around $1000 + to fly to japan!! @_@ errr..... i don't understand why it could only cost $423?
sometimes prices change
it is so much of a pain in the @## to get through security, plus airlines fighting to stay in business, that they have dropped obscenely low.
Travel channel ran a special on it earlier this week
I'd advise that no one head to Japan right now until the threat from North Korea has been a little more neutralized...
OMG! That's really cheap!
All,
post if about a year old now :)
Just got back from Japan recently although I flew for free using my Frequent flyer miles. Have not priced anymore round trips recently.
I will say I found a hotel in Ueno that was fairly cheap. 8 days, 1 person $580. 2 people was slight more but not much.
