Not saying it is going to happen (have not heard from anyone about setting one up yet) however if one was to happen how would you forsee it.
easy setup would be to get a console (probably ps2 with the eye toy :) ) and a tv setup in one of the rooms. (small layout) Having one person run it and have someone work the door to control room flow. I have all the karoke revolutions, sing stars and a few japanese karoke revolutions for the ps/2.
The other way is to rent a karoke setup but that maybe out of budget
the real cheap way is to buy the speaker and mic setup with a few cd's :p
now on selection. The japanese karaoke is in kanji mostly at least for the japanese songs, you maybe able to get some with english subs but i'm not sure there would be much of a demand for traditional japanese Karaoke songs, another idea is to capture the intro/endings of various animes with the english subtitles. that would probably be fun. Since the text will come across in english although I will need to get premission to do this and display it at the convention. Could also be unique i have not heard about anyone else doing this but again I have not been to many convention lately either.Of course I could bring all my dvd's in instead of capturing the shows but queing them up would take alot of time.
I actually like the last idea. now to get someone to work it and see if our staff would approve it.
could also pick up some old sofas from goodwill to put in the room, but they tend to smell bad, although at an anime convention it may not matter much :)
My only thing would be... maybe we can have it... um not at the same time of the cosplay!!!

I know the karaoke machine format is ideal, but I don't see it happening. Putting in a dvd to play
the opening and pop it out and then change takes a long time if you're doing it for all of the songs
and you have to realize people's song selection varies like you wouldn't believe! I don't think it's very
feasible.
I like how matsuri did it. They had bunch of songs karaoke versioned.. (which we didn't use much but it was a good back up.) And people could bring instrumental versions or karaoke version of the songs. I realize
those are kind of hard to find even if you google for centries... so I think it would be helpful if onicon had
one of those programs that "karaoke-fy" songs that are being played and people could bring in songs they want to sing. The programs wouldn't be able to completely take the voices off, but it will definitely be usable. I know some freeware programs have the karaoke-fy option, so I think it would be relatively possible.
If people didn't bring music cds, that would be fine... they would just have to choose from the random list of songs the con provides... but they can't complain because they had the option of bringing music.
Of course the karaoke people will want to specify what kind of formats are acceptable. CDs? USD flash drives?
(and format of music too: mp3, wav etc etc)
well I would definelty rip the Opening and endings to a hard drive then play from there. Easy and fast access times. Would also get the cleaning openings (that is as long as they came subtitled) But Would need to get the OK from the different distrubutors of the shows.
hmmm. Not sure about the CD's being Karaoke-Fied not sure if there would be any legal issues with doing this. As far as finding music, I was in a record store in Hong Kong with aisle of Karoke cd's. I seen the same in Japan. But most the music is blah. for storage for sofas, we do have a storage unit. although not sure if it is big enough.
I would definitely love to see karaoke this year. And even a contest with some actual judges who are Japanese maybe? Or people who are more qualified. I would definitely compete. I just love to sing!^^ Bring your CDs/USB Drives and sing what you would like!
I don't know.. there's a couple of anime songs with absolutely obnoxious, not-appropriate lyrics... and that might be an issue. Plus we might pronounce something wrong turning it into a really dirty song... lol; I'd rather have the judges not understand what the hell we're saying. (Not that our pronounciation will be that great anyways...)
But yeah, a Karaoke contest would be definitely great as long as no one threatens anybody like ikkicon last year...
Well, I think they would know that most of the people singing would be doing it for fun. Some are serious though. Trust me,, I know some of the people who were in the contest at the last Anime Matsuri and they were serious. lol. I will be.^^ Well, I think it would be cool if the person who won the karaoke contest was allowed to perform their song on the stage in front of the whole audience for the main event. That would the be most fun and exhilarating thing ever. That's why I would like the judges to be more professional than the ones at Anime Matsuri were. They picked someone who sang an english song to win. It was for Japanese/anime karaoke contest.....not that I think an english song can't be anime related and the guy wasn't good, but the way the judges went about the judging was just sub-par. The judges knowing Japanese would be just a little fun thing to experience too.^^
