I seriously hope that I'm not the only that feels this way:
But, WHY is OniCon at George R. Brown?! I adored and worshipped OniCon until they moved into GRB. My point is simply this: Not everyone gets a room at the shnazy hotels! Not everyone has the money to do so! So, what do these people do? They eat 10x more sugar than L has in a lifetime and stay up for 3 days straight!!!! Or at least, that's what I always did. Sometimes, if I had enough money, I would get a hotel. But one of the main attractions and best time of any convention I've ever been to is when I'm staying up all night and find a panel room where there's about 8 voice actors and producers messing around and playing games. Especially since they always let anyone who shows up, JOIN IN! Sometimes, the VAs don't sleep either! But, unfortunately, with GRB, this fun-filled happenstance is entirely eliminated. The VAs are forced back to their hotel rooms and people are forced outside because the GRB CLOSES?! O.o This doesn't make any sense. Sometimes, the only times I can even go to a con is if I do the staying up for 3 days straight after buying my 3-day pass. But, after learning of the GRB, me and 27 other peopl I know skimped out on getting 3-day passes and only got a 1-day pass for either Friday or Saturday and even had to leave early because their ride didn't want to pick them at midnight or 1AM.
OniCon looses money by people not wanting the full 3-day passes, as well as the fact that people have to end up leaving early (less time spending money) and go home. So, inevitably, OniCon will have to raise prices for pretty much everything.
Oh, and one last downside: GRB refuses to let the vendors sell any food!! O.o???
This is MADNESS! Does ANYONE agree with me AT ALL out there???????

wow...you seem much smarter than you sound...
and no, i don't agree wiyh you...
but i could give you some advice...get a job and stop b!tch!ng about things ppl already talked about...
Dokuhebichan:
I appreciate your concern.
As the convention grows, there needs to be bigger space. People being squeezed in like sardines is not very pleasant for the majority of convention attendees.
If funds are an issue, you can volunteer at the convention to receive a three day pass. You will have to work for about two or more hours each day. You can volunteer for anything. Email the particular department that you would like to be a part.
Yes, it is unfortunate that the convention center will not allow vendors to sell food in the Dealers' Room. Yet, it is not madness. With any business there are contracts. If the convention center has a contract that states that food cannot be sold unless by their primary food provider, that contract must be followed.
Once again, I appreciate your concern. I hope that this does not skew your thoughts on the convention as a whole. Be well.
Well, I do hate the fact that food can't be sold unless it's from the GRB vendors but having to deal with it for 3 straight cons doesn't bother me anymore.I think last year it was reported we broke the 5000 mark? *confirmation?* So,as the con grows we're going to need a bigger venue, and well,it's the GRB,enough said.It is what is,and it'll be like that until the higher-ups find somewhere else...bigger,if that's possible.0_o
I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough since food was mentioned in replies twice. I intended to emphasize the fact that its not open 24 hours. I don't know anything about the sales but I've seen at least 40 people or more saying that they either buy a one-day pass and barely spend any money in the dealer's room, or they buy a 3-day pass and a hotel room and have no more money to spend whatsoever. That's all. I know little ole me can't change minds about locationing and such, I just thought I'd voice my concern. I mean no disrespect, but I've completely stopped going there because I see no point (get in around 10am, have to leave at roughly 10pm, not even enough time to stay the rave). That's ALL, I was just letting people(owners) know my opinion (that's the POINT of forums for an organization "baisengan", so don't say I'm complaining)
anyway, thank you "Kunai Krazy"

*oh, and I have a life, so I'm not going to sit and read every single forum topic just to see if somebody has posted this before me*
If you know of a place that can take us, we'll look into any suggestions.
Well,
On the 24 hours. In most cases after 3am (which is when we close usally) it just gives people a place to crash in a movie room, hotel lobby or other place. From running the Gameroom I usally only see about 6-10 people in the room, some sleeping. Really I don't care but in coming in the next mouring i usally have to clean up trash left the night before. All I can suggest is to crash in your or a friends Car instead of a random Con location/Hotel. I know somepeople are dropped off and may not have a car, or a car big enough for everyone they came with. I guess I would view it different if there were like a 1,000 people wanting to do something after 3am. I have been going to cons for a long time and from past experience the only rooms that were open after 2am or so were the movie rooms anyway. most conventions including a-kon did not have a dance or late night rave(really a rave wanna be, if it was a real rave you would not know about it :p ) that is more of a recent thing that came about.
I do hate the food thing. It sucks that the prices are high and the food that is supplied is so-so. when i was a congoer I would usally bring some ramen and use the coffe pot to heat water to eat. Order a pizza and meet them in the lobby. there is the 4-houston mail and across the streer the other direction is a mini China town mail and several restraunts. Daidos has ranma and pocky pretty cheap if you are in houston, you can always buy ahead of time.
I think the GRB is great, there is alot of room but i think the dealers room needs to be a bit bigger. Other then that i think is great, there is alot of room for everything. Now about the rooms there are alot of ppl that i seen post blogs that are willing to share rooms and help pay for the room.
I like GRB because of all the room. YOU try pushing a stroller in a cramped convention hall and see how many people complain after that! There are people who wear elaborate costumes, and outfits, not to mention the ones wielding weapons that trip you, poke you, knock you over, wack you over the head, or in the face, in the back, and other places that just ain't right!!! THAT is why such a big convention like Oni-con is at a convention center. Try puting ANIMEXPO into a tiny cramped hotel and see what happens! If you don't like it take up you own silent protest then but I bet alot of people will and do agree with me that the GRB is a good roomy place for Oni-con that won't make too many people angry.
Also GRB has a very structured facility that shows international convention guests the caliber of Oni-con. I know last year Rentrer en Soi appreciated the space they played in. Usually bands end up playing in 300 max capacity dining halls with no acoustics and the people in the back cant hear them at all and too many people end up getting hurt because they all try to get in a small space..believe me, I've been working cons since the birth of Oni-con and it may not be long, but its long enough to know whats comfortable to work in and whats a well structered enviornment and what isnt.
Hear Hear!
