Volunteering is good, because you usually only have to work about 12 hours at a convention and then you would have a 3-day badge for the convention. Depending on the department you work it, can change the number of hours you actually work. Sometimes you get closes contact with guests that you don't normally get as a con-attendee. It is fun, and looks good on a resume. Yup i said it... think about it, you are volunteering at a special event that helps keep kids off the streets.
You also get a big change of perspective from Con-Goer to Con-Staff. You'll know exactly what's going on behind the scenes if you pay attention enough. There's also no lines for you as long as you're working . But in my experience I've never found volunteering at a convention as work. Sure you're helping run the convention, but that's fun in itself. Just a matter of perspective I suppose.
yeah i've always wanted to volunteer for a con, but i'm worried that i wont get to go the events that i want
like especially the concert and stuff.
really the only things i dont want to miss are the concert events and dance.
if i could just work early shifts, I'd love to help out.
That's all dependant on who you're working for and what events are happening at what time. Most Staff/Crew Managers are usually sympathetic to your needs as long as you do your share. In most cases you'll get to do the things you want, but your hours may be spread out throught the convention and in between events. But you're probably looking for 'well I've been screwed over because...'
In that case, look no further than your fellow volunteers. I've been a part of the security staff in three conventions, all of which being a Security Lieutenant (though that doesn't mean anything to you ) but my shifts were always extended because of volunteers either not showing up for their shifts, or not showing up any where -- at all. A good Lieutenant (The asisstant managerial types) will usually make up for the lack of man-power, but expect to get pulled on for an event if they need more bodies. But again, from my experiences I've never let anyone miss an event they wanted to go to. But it all also depends on the individuals and tasks involved.
Sorry that I can't really give you any real garauntees about what staff at Oni-Con will be like. But if it's anything like the other conventions I was a part of, you'll probably have more fun being on staff than actually just being a regular con-goer.
Koji is right, If you volunteer for Security it is one of the hardest departments to work for and I do work you rather hard, after your 12 hours you are free to enjoy the con. Most of all I do ensure my LT Andrew works hard to help gear your work around your con needs. See you all at the con!!!!/DOC
