Sadly, I doubt I will get out of the Battlegrounds room long enough to do much socializing, though I will try to at least run into the boardies meet up at least briefly if for no reason other than to wave before ducking back out to make sure no one is setting my room on fire in my absence.
They are completely right though, I've made a lot of friends at the conventions- just be social. Never be afraid to walk up and start talking to someone. If they are receptive, fun times, you've got a conversation. If they are not? Thousands of others to mingle with. You have countless potential friends out there, just gotta find them.
Repeat attendance helps too, as you start to recognize familiar faces and vice versa.
Trying to get my friends to a con is an task within itself, at this point I just stop asking to see if they wanna go, and just travel up there on my own!
